Manage the beacons that identify your places

When Bluetooth is enabled, your device will position you in your places

You will receive will appear when there is a beacon nearby that you can add to your collection.

Scan

Scan for nearby BLE beacons.

Results are ordered by those closest to you.

Click on a result to add it to your places.

You will be notified if Bluetooth needs to be turned on.

Name

Select a name that identifies your environment.

Select from the suggestions or enter your own

Use the same name for multiple beacons to cover a larger area.

Remove beacons that you no longer wish to track.

  • Q. What data is stored on the device?
    My Places stores a list of beacons that have been added to your collection and the name that has been assigned to each of them.
  • Q. What data is stored remotely?
    No extra data is stored remotely from the My Places app.

  • Q. What are BLE beacons?
    Bluetooth Low Energy is a wireless personal area network that is designed to provide a short communication range with low power consumption. We use branded Kontakt.io iBeacons in this experiment. Bluetooth must be enabled on your device in order to detect the beacons (Settings > Bluetooth > ON). Your device does not need to be discoverable and you do not have to pair with any beacons in order to detect them.
  • Q. What is a place?
    A place is a contextual label for a physical area. We recommend that you put the beacons in places that you frequent often and that you feel comfortable leaving your belongings. My Places provides a list of suggestions to help you name your beacons. If you would like to use a suggestion, just click on it in the list.

  • Q. How do I add a beacon to My Places?
    Open the My Places app to check that you have added the nearby beacon (My Places > Scan). If you are prompted to enable Bluetooth, make sure that you do this (Settings > Bluetooth > ON). You will have to turn your screen off and on again to start service. Nearby beacons will be displayed in the list, with the nearest ones at the top. Click on the one yowiu wish to add to your collection and assign it a name.

  • Q. Can I move a beacon to somewhere else?
    Feel free to move the beacon around. Just remember to rename the beacon if you put it in a different place.
  • Q. I know someone who has a beacons, can I add their ones to my collection?
    Feel free to assign as many places as you have beacons available.
  • Q. My beacon is not being detected, can I have a replacement?
    To check if you can detect beacons, follow the instructions above to add a beacon you to your collection. If the beacon has been added then there will be a tick beside it when it is detected. If the beacon is not detected in the scan, then there is a chance that it has run out of battery. If you believe this to be the case, please contact the experimentor who will replace it for you.
